Started in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain name extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to buy john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired third-level domains remained operational.
